Seniors will enjoy free screenings and seminars at the third annual Northern Michigan Senior Expo May 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
First Federal of Northern Michigan and WATZ are hosting the event at the Thunder Bay Recreational Center. Among the events will be free health screenings to test blood pressure, colorectal cancer, bone density, sleep apnea, depression, anxiety and dementia. These screenings, provided by the Alpena Regional Medical Center, are free and require no appointment time.
Other screenings offered at a discounted price will test for stroke, vascular and heart disease, available for $100, and lipid and blood sugar tests, available for $25. Judy MacNeill, coordinator of health services at the event, said the prices of these tests are drastically reduced.
"It's really doing a huge service for the community and allowing people to find out where they are in terms of health risk," she said.
Among the other events and exhibits are free, half-hour seminars that will begin at 10:45 a.m. and will discuss topics such as health insurance coverage, living independently, living with home care and avoiding senior moments. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for 50 cents. Al Bondar, entertainer and keyboardist, will perform throughout the event.
"It's a one-stop shop to gather information and facts," Jami Patterson, marketing manager at First Federal, said. "It's a great place to come and get to know what local services and providers can offer for our local seniors."
Community businesses are eligible to set up booths at the event where questions and concerns of those attending the event can be addressed. A representative from Sen. Debbie Stabenow's office also will be available at the event to answer any questions.
The event is open to anyone of any age, Patterson said.
"Information and screenings are pertaining to seniors, but anyone who is involved in taking care of a senior or is going to become a senior, which is all of us, will find valuable information," she said.
