Auction proceeds to go to Alpena, PI counties

April 9, 2010

A room filled with a variety of items seized during a raid at a location on Klee Road west of Rogers City earlier this year will be auctioned off April 24, according to auctioneer Don Horrocks.

The items seized include a large selection of "high-end" tools, swords, snowblowers and other items. All will be sold to the highest bidder and the funds collected will be split 60-40 by the City of Alpena and Presque Isle County.

Rick Steiger, Presque Isle County prosecutor, said the split is being made because the case started in Alpena with an investigation of possible mail fraud. The investigating officer and Steiger resolved the auction issue and the sale of the seized property, three vehicles, a trailer and a snowmobile as well as the other smaller items, will take place at 10 a.m. April 24 inside the old Nowicki Store on Third Street across from the Presque Isle County Courthouse.

"I'm not sure if anyone has a complete list of the items for public release, but I can tell you that there is a large amount of tools and recreational items being stored in advance of the sale," Steiger said. "There is, to borrow a phrase, something for everyone. I anticipate that our share of the proceeds could approach $20,000."

Steiger said a bank account has been cleared and several ounces of silver and gold already have been sold, amounting to several thousand dollars.

Horrocks said there will not be a pre-registration for the auction and all sales will be cash-and-carry to the highest bidder.
