ACC, Educational Talent Search hosting career pathway open house

POSTED: March 12, 2010

Educational Talent Search and Alpena Community College have teamed up for a career pathway open house March 22 from 6-9 p.m. at Park Arena.

Bob Newton, director of educational talent search, said the event is open to everyone. He said it would be especially beneficial for high school students interested in dual enrollment and for those who are unemployed or considering a career change.

"Now is the time to retool," he said. "If you don't have the skills, you do it while the economy is down, not after they're hiring and find out you don't have the skills to get hired."

The event is open to anyone although it allows students who are deciding on a career, individuals who are wondering if college is for them and individuals who are out of work, looking for a job or in need of new job skills to explore their options.

Career presentations will be given by individuals who are experts in their field. Many experts will speak about their careers in health sciences, human services, natural resources and agriscience, arts and communications, business, management and marketing technology as well as engineering, manufacturing and industrial technology. The first session of presentations scheduled from 6:30-7 p.m., the second from 7:15-7:45 p.m. and the third from 8-8:30 p.m.

An introductory and informational session will be held for attendees in Park Arena beginning at 6 p.m. where they also can pick up their activity schedules and have refreshments.

Informational presentations will be given about financial aid and scholarships, job search strategies and resume writing, dual enrollment, Northwood University programs at ACC as well as Ferris State University programs at ACC. Attendees have the opportunities to visit the colleges labs including those from concrete technology, automotive, manufacturing, welding, CAD/engineering, technology, nursing, biology and chemistry and the fine arts building. Representatives from Michigan Works and Star Staffing will be at the open house, also.

Prizes and drawings will be available. Questions or more information can be directed to 358-7348.
