Alpena High School senior Kendra McInerney is competing this week in Michigan's Junior Miss Scholarship Program.

The finale to this 52nd annual scholarship program takes place Saturday at Saline High School. Nineteen young women from around the state will be competing for $10,000 in college scholarships and the chance to represent Michigan's Junior Miss Scholarship Program at local events around the state as well as at America's Junior Miss National Scholarship program in Mobile, Ala.

McInerney, the 17-year-old daughter of Grace Johnson and Ken McInerney, both of Alpena, plans to attend Alpena Community College following her graduate. After ACC, she is looking at Western Michigan University, where she hopes to earn degrees in musical theatre and pyschology.

While at AHS, McInerney has served as secretary for the Masquers Club, Concert Choir and Women's Choral. She is a member of the Senior Planning Committee and the Forensics Team.

McInerney and the other contestants will perform on stage in an opening number and compete in a performing arts talent routine, a physical fitness routine, and self expression. For her performing arts segment, McInerney will sing "So Much Better" from "Legally Blonde, the Musical."

The contestants are also evaluated in based on scholastics and interview.

This year's program theme is "Fame." Guest performers will be Michigan's Junior Miss 2009, Joanna Bierlein, Jan's Dance Connection, and the Saline Twirlettes.

Tickets to the event can be purchased by contacting State Director Lydia Soroosh at 734-426-4744 or by emailing mijrmiss@yahoo.com. Ticket prices are $15 and all proceeds go toward scholarship awards.

Michigan's Junior Miss Scholarship Program awards college scholarships to young women who have distinguished themselves at school and in their communities. The program is part of America's Junior Miss Program, which is the largest and oldest scholarship program for high school seniors in the country.

Since America's Junior Miss first began in 1958, over $90 million dollars in college scholarships have been awarded. National sponsors are Alabama Power, Encore Rehabilitation, Mobile Gas, Regions Bank, Bob Baker Scholarship Fund, and the city and county of Mobile, Ala. More information on this worthwhile scholarship program is available at www.ajm.org.
