A $5 investment

31 years later purchase becomes city’s Christmas tree

Jerry and Debbie Krans never imagined the one-foot blue spruce they bought 31 years ago would one day grow up to become the 34-foot tree that is being displayed as this year's Alpena city Christmas tree.

The couple purchased the tree in 1978 for $5 at Perch's IGA and planted it in the corner of their front yard on Baldwin Street. Over the years as the tree grew, it became a well-known landmark in the neighborhood.

"We used to put lights on it until it got too big. I used a step ladder and a broom to put the lights on it," Jerry said.

The tree often was a focal point of family gatherings and served as a background for photos signifying important events such as graduations. Since the tree was cut down and hauled away by city workers, the neighbors and the couple's daughter have commented on the tree's absence and that things don't look the same any more. Their son, who currently lives in the Minneapolis, Minn., area has yet to see the yard without the tree.

"We all had mixed emotions," Debbie said of the tree's absence.

Jerry said he first thought of donating the tree to the city several years ago because he thought it had nice size and shape. He contacted the city last year, but was told another tree already had been considered and the Kranses' tree would be considered for this year. The city workers liked the tree's easy access because of being on the corner and that it wasn't located near any hanging wires.

"It makes you feel good you gave it to the community," Debbie said.

In a press release issued announcing the Christmas tree donors, the city thanked the Kranses for their donation.

"Their contribution has helped bring beauty and cheer to the City of Alpena this holiday season," the release stated.

The Kranses plan to build a berm in the area where the tree once stood with flowers and shrubs, although that will take more maintenance than the tree did, Jerry said.

This year's official lighting of the city Christmas tree will take place following the Lafarge-Bolenz Jewelry Lighted Holiday Parade on Friday.
