Alpena set to honor veterans

Steve Schulwitz
POSTED: November 5, 2009

Local veterans have noticed a change in the way they are being perceived by those who never served in combat. Since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have begun, the war vets have noticed a new appreciation for the sacrifices they have made.

VFW 2494 Chaplain Darwin Mausolf said for many of the vets, the years that followed their deployment were filled with a sense of disconnect with the general public.

"We felt like outcasts and were pretty much ignored," Mausolf said. "There really has been a change though. Over the last few years there has been a return of patriotism and it really makes you feel honored to be from Alpena and to be a vet."

On Wednesday the veterans in Alpena will gather at Little Flanders Field for the annual Veteran's Day service. Mausolf said last year about 300 people showed up in support. He hopes this year's attendance mirrors the 2008 event.

"Veteran's Day is always celebrated on Nov. 11, at (11 a.m.) the same day and time that the bill was signed to celebrate Armistice Day," Mausolf said. "This year's speaker is (Col.) Erwin Samson, commanding officer from the base here in Alpena. We have a prayer, say the Pledge of Allegiance, place the wreaths at the foot of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Then the honor guard will do the gun salute."

Every year the a veteran of the year is chosen for their work and dedication to veterans, along with others. Unfortunately this year's winner, David Smith, will not be in attendance because he passed away recently.

"He knew he was going to get the award and his wife, Dr. Elaine Smith, is going to accept it on his behalf," Mausolf said. "He is very deserving. He always volunteered for things and was there when we needed him. It is quite an honor to receive this award."

Mausolf said the service is not only a way to recognize the veterans, but it is a time to celebrate friendships. He also hopes new relationships can be formed.

"I really like the fact that I get to see a lot of my buddies that I haven't seen in a while and catch up on old times," Mausolf said. "I can also notice the people that are strangers that are there and it is great to get their support. I'm glad to see the patriotism and I hope it continues."
