Church to honor vets with blood drive

Crystal Nelson
POSTED: November 4, 2009

Civilians will be able to give the gift of life in honor of the men and women who have served in the armed forces this Veteran's Day. On Wednesday, Immanuel Lutheran Church members will host an American Red Cross blood drive at First Presbyterian Church from 12-6 p.m. in the gymnasium.

Marilyn Frank, event coordinator, said Immanuel Lutheran Church hosts an annual blood drive in November with the event falling on the second Wednesday of the month. Frank said Immanuel Lutheran Church always has had a good blood drive and believes it has been successful over the years.

"Our goal last year was 51 (people to donate blood) and we met the goal and this year we're hoping for 52," she said.

According to a press release from the American Red Cross, a gift of life will help them ensure there's a safe and adequate blood supply to help those in need, when they need it.

With the recent flu outbreaks across the state and the nation, blood donations are down and many people are unable to donate as they have flu-like symptoms, according to the Red Cross.

"This makes it even more important for those of us that are healthy and eligible to donate blood," the press release said.

Frank said there are about 36 people signed up to donate blood so far, a little over half of the appointments that can be scheduled. She said although scheduling an appointment is recommended, walk-ins are welcome but they may need to wait a little longer.

To schedule an appointment to donate blood, call Frank at 356-0828. First Presbyterian Church is located 1600 W. Chisholm Street.

Once a person has donated blood, they have to wait eight weeks before they can donate it again. Frank said there will be an opportunity for people to sign up for the next blood drive they are eligible to give the gift of life.
