Mio whips Au Gres

MIO - The Mio Thunderbolts stayed home Friday night to play Au Gres and came out with a dominating 60-6 victory.

Mio kept the ball on the ground for all but two plays and totaled 470 rushing yards.

Aaron Smith led the unstoppable rushing attack with 20 carries for 153 yards and a touchdown. Smith also led Mio on defense with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Neil Hanson carried the ball 5 times and gained 72 yards and had 2 touchdowns. Grant Price had 5 carries for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns. Zac Pillars had 3 carries for 65 yards and a touchdown, while Zac Bills had two rushing touchdowns of his own.

Mio is at home next week against Hale before traveling to Suttons Bay for the season finale.

Whittemore-Prescott 34, Alcona 20

LINCOLN - The Alcona Tigers were in action Friday night at home against Whittemore-Prescott, but Terry Franklin's Tigers lost their final football home game of the year 34-20.

Senior Chris Stewart had a big game with 14 carries and 104 yards rushing along with 3 touchdowns. Stewart scored two of his three touchdowns in the first quarter. One score came on a 28-yard run and another on a 74-yard run. He would score again in the third quarter on a 34-yard touchdown reception.

Kevin Fettes had 139 yards rushing on 30 carries and had 8 tackles on defense.

Alcona (4-3) heads to Oscoda next week before finishing the season against Deckerville.

GIRLS GOLF

Alpena takes sixth at regional

FLINT - The Alpena girls golf team had a team score of 410, which put the Wildcats sixth overall out of 12 teams, at the Division 2 regional in Flint on Thursday.

Maggie Skiba shot a 94 to lead Alpena's effort. Sara Musch added a 96, followed by a 99 from Kristen Kennedy and a 121 from Sarah McLaren.

"The girls gained valuable experience during this tournament that will carry over to next year. I am very pleased with their performance today and looking forward to next year," said Alpena head coach Vicky Lindsay.

Lapeer West won the regional with a score of 365. Swartz Creek followed with a 382 and Flushing was third (389).
