Gary and Mary (Henry) Hartman recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with all of their children and most of their grandchildren at the Oakland Hunt Club in Alcona County.
They were married July 11, 1959, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alpena. For their honeymoon they drove to Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, across the then very new Mackinaw Bridge, and enjoyed an aerial sight-seeing trip featuring the locks between Lakes Superior and Huron.
The couple met at a Navy Mothers Club Dance at the old Eagles Club on River Street in the fall of 1957.
Mary was born in Alpena, attended Catholic Central High School and was primarily a homemaker for the first 12 years of marriage. She worked as a cosmetologist for 13 years at the Figurehead, and then retired after 12 years at JC Penney, working as a cosmetologist and the salon manager.
Gary was also born in Alpena and graduated from Alpena High School in 1954. He enlisted in the Navy, and completed a four-year term in December 1958, that included two years aboard the USS Foss in the Pacific. He worked as a draftsman/engineer for 29 years at Huron Portland Cement Co., as an engineer for one year at CSI in Grayling and as an engineer for 15 years at Eagle Engineering Co.
Both Gary and Mary have been active members of Trinity Episcopal Church throughout their years of marriage.
The couple has three children: Kevin and wife Sally (Hatch) of East Granby, Conn.; Kathy and husband Del Ferris of Alpena and Karl of Kingsley. They have six grandchildren: Derek, Travis, Geoffrey, Genna, Gordon and John, and one great-grandchild, Chloe.
