Program to assist in disposal of medication starts May 1
Steve SchulwitzChris Angel, president of the Great Lakes Clean Water Organization, shared the details of a new program in Northeast Michigan to the Intergovernmental Air and Water Quality Committee. The program will assist people in discarding their prescription drugs and help keep local waters clean.
"We have gotten the funding to run a pilot program for a three-month period that will utilize 12 area pharmacies as drop off points for peoples non-narcotic medicines," Angel said. "There will be one at Neiman's Family Market, The Drug Store and The Medicine Shoppe. People can take their medicine there instead of flushing it down the toilet."
The program will begin May 1, and if things go well it could be implemented on a full time basis.
"I feel a sense of accomplishment," Angel said. "We may have to make a few small tweaks as we move along, but I think this could be a long term plan. I think the public will respond just fine. People have nowhere else to take it."
The next meeting for the Air Water Quality Committee is slated for May 21.
