Car crashes into Rogers City credit union
Mike ModrzynskiA 66-year-old Millersburg man drove his pickup truck into the front of the Onaway Credit Union branch office in Rogers City Tuesday morning. No one was injured in the accident, but branch manager Scot Pauly said the building will likely be closed for at least 24 hours.
"We have a lot of cleanup to accomplish but as soon as the electricians and contractors can seal up the building, we will get to work," Pauly said. "I am hoping we can at least offer some services to our members as early as Wednesday morning. The damage is very significant but we are very thankful none of our employees or the driver of the truck were injured.
Rogers City Police Chief Matt Quaine said the accident appears to be just that, a missed-pedal accident. He said the driver, Melvin Freier of Millersburg, apparently missed the brake pedal and stepped on the accelorator, sending his 2002 Chevrolet pickup into the front of the building. He said the truck didn't penetrate very far into the building, but pieces of brick and the furniture inside the building showered the counter and the customer waiting area.
"We are just thankful there were no injuries, but we had EMS respond to check the driver before he was allowed to leave," Quaine said. "Mr. Freier failed to control his vehicle, but that's probably going to be the extent of it."
