Local physician honored
Crystal NelsonThree members of the medical community were honored at the third annual Physician's Banquet at the Besser Museum Thursday. Richard Bates, OBGYN at the Women's Health Center of Alpena was recognized as this year's physician. Diane Sims and Diane Tabor of the medical staff office were also given recognition.
The event is the only event in Alpena where physicians get to honor physicians for their achievements.
"The event is about all the local physicians in the community nominating one colleague that they feel deserves special recognition," Joanne Root, Chief of Medical Staff, said. "The recognition is for service to the community, excellence in patient care and dedication to the hospital."
Bates was given the Minerva Medica Award, an owl shaped statue. Minerva was the roman name for the greek goddess Athena and was considered to be the goddess of medicine.
"I am totally humbled to be honored by all of you," Bates said. "There is no higher honor, truly, than to be recognized by your peers for doing what we do."
ARMC Library Technician Alicia Dietz, who helped coordinate the event said this is the first year the event has recognized two people in addition to the physician. Sims and Tabor received a plaque and roses.
Sims certificate was presented for her accomplishments and contributions for physician recruitment and retention. Tabor was recognized for her contributions for the ARMC medical staff.
Around 80 physicians and their spouses attended the banquet Thursday night. Physicians were able to mingle before the awards presentation and attend the banquet after.
"Every physician says how wonderful it is that they actually have a dinner dedicated to them," Dietz said.
