Editorial: Cavin’s dream becomes reality
The ribbon cutting this week for the first phase of housing units at Alpena Village marked the culmination of years of hard work and dreams of many people across the region.
We couldn't help but think of one of those visionaries - former Hubbard Lake resident Ted Cavin - who worked tirelessly in his retirement to see the project transition from the dream stage to the ribbon cutting this week. We lament Cavin's death earlier this year that prevented him from experiencing this week's celebration, yet we believe wholeheartedly he was smiling that familiar Cavin grin while watching the proceedings from up above.
In a region where those age 50 or better make up a large portion of the demographics, housing such as that being offered at Alpena Village is extremely important. And, as more and more older citizens discover the beauty of the region - named the number one retirement community in the Great Lakes region last year - such housing will be even more in demand.
Since the very first conceptual meeting where citizens gathered in the meeting hall at Alpena's First Congregational Church, we have been impressed with how this project has progressed. If ever there was an example of groups working together toward a common goal this would be it, as it forged partnerships and agreements most people never would have thought possible.
It's wonderful to see a worthwhile dream all those years ago mature into fruition with this week's ceremony.
And thank you Ted for your huge role in making this week a reality.
