Busy week for ACC

POSTED: July 17, 2008

Students flocked to Alpena Community College's Park Arena this week to take advantage of ACC's early registration days. The three-day early registration opportunity began on Tuesday and closed Thursday.

"It's a one-stop shop here in (Park Arena)," said Admissions Director Mike Kollien. "We have registration, financial aid, payment, parking permits and Compass Placement testing available right here."

The arena perimeter was filled with faculty advisors from all departments ranging from criminal justice to social sciences. Students who took advantage of early registration must pay their tuition by Aug. 8. Kollien believes the Aug. 8 due date provides students with enough time to work on financial aid and student loans.

"Everything students need to do is here," said Todd Artley, electrical department instructor and advisor. "Within 20 minutes to an hour students can be registered and on their way."

Incoming freshman Alysse Susan, 18, said with her current busy schedule it would be impossible for her to register on the regular registration dates.

"Having early registration available takes a lot of stress off of me," Susan said. "I've been really nervous about starting college and knowing everything is set will be a real relief."

Second year student Chad Elowsky is excited to finish his schedule ahead of time so it will not interfere with his work schedule.

"To get everything done before the week classes start is great," Elowsky said. "I can get the time off work right now and won't have to worry about changing my work schedule when I start classes."

Considering ACC enrolls many non-traditional students, providing early scheduling is key in helping them make time for school around their already saturated schedules, Artley said.

"It allows the students to get a more condensed schedule to work around day care or work, because when they register early they have all the sections to choose from," Artley said.

According to Kollien students who didn't participant in early registration will have to wait till the next registration period, Aug. 19-21, just a few days before classes begin on Aug. 25.
