From left to right: Alpena-Youth Volunteer Corps participants Reed Stepankski, 11, and Matt Urban, 15, assemble felt tic-tac-toe boards for refugee camps in Afghanistan at the First Methodist Church on Ripley Boulevard. In addition to tic-tac-toe boards, the group of youth volunteers put together 50 blankets in three days to send to the camps through the nationwide Operation Care effort, “Sew Much Comfort.” The campaign helps supply the camps with blankets, games and velcro-efficient clothing for those who have severe injuries. “The refugees in the camps tend to be in tent-like structures,” said Julie Cuzick, Operation Care volunteer. “They make shelter out of anything they can get their hands on ... They need all the help they can get.” Eleven-year-old Carleigh Luckert said “it feels pretty good” knowing that refugees will be wearing blankets she helped create to keep warm.
