Students' fight causes lockdown
Mike ModrzynskiPosen Consolidated Schools Superintendent Dru Milliron locked down his building Friday morning at 10:10 a.m., following an allegation that a student had a gun.
Presque Isle County Sheriff Department Deputy John Kasuba said his investigation into the incident revealed that two eighth-grade girls got into an argument that escalated into a very loud confrontation.
Apparently, one of the girls walked away and the other girl involved in the argument turned to third person and said, “She’s so (mad) and will probably get a gun and come back.”
Kasuba, assisted by Michigan State Police Trooper Steve Bullock, determined the third person had misinterpreted the comment and reported that a student had a gun. However, he said the student did the right thing and Milliron locked down his building immediately.
The student who wallked away from the argument left the building and returned later with her mother. Kasuba said the family does not own a gun.
He said the school regularly practices lockdown procedures for just such a situation and everything went well. The lockdown proved to be unnecessary, but it makes him feel good that Posen officials is taking allegations as serious as they did and were quick to respond.
Milliron said the lockdown will occur every time in a situation like that for the safety of the students and staff.
“The lockdown was done for all the right reasons. We have to respond quickly until we can get the situation under control,” Milliron said. “The police turned the incident over to me to take any necessary action. We have decided that no action will be taken by the school against either of the students involved ... the issue is settled.”
