Editorial: Use caution, take more time due to road construction

April 8, 2008
Alpena News
Road and street construction has begun in earnest in Northeast Michigan, creating detours, traffic slowdowns, and in some instances a bit of frustration for motorists.

While at times it may seem like a nuisance, it means better conditions in the future. It’s a mantra drivers may want to repeat to themselves when they find themselves in less than optimum traveling conditions.

It should be noted that traffic signs are up as a reminder for motorists to slow down and watch for road workers. Those same signs also point out the possible fines and jail time if you injure or kill a worker while in the construction zone.

With all the of reminders, motorists have been given plenty of notice of the potential detours and slowdowns. Given that everyone likely will encounter these construction zones at some point over the next several weeks, we encourage you to give yourself more time to reach your destination.

Leave a few minutes early to allow for any detours or possible stops you may encounter. Do it not only for the workers along the way, but your fellow motorists. If everyone makes allowances for the inconveniences, we all will get through the construction season.
