Unidentified human remains found in Thunder Bay River

Human remains were discovered in the Thunder Bay River near the Second Avenue Bridge in Alpena Sunday morning.

The Alpena City Police Department and Alpena Fire Department were dispatched to the area after recieving a report of a body floating in the water. Upon arrival, officials saw an object floating in the middle of the river.

Fire Department officials launced a rescue boat and recovered the object, which was indeed a portion of a human body. Officials searched other areas along the river, including by the Thunder Bay Power Company dam.

The body was transported to Alpena Regional Medical Center.

As of late Sunday it had not yet been identified.

The Alpena Police Department, which is handling the investigation, is asking anyone with knowledge of a missing person to contact them.

A police department source told The Alpena News that a forensic autopsey will be performed and that there were no signs that immediately pointed to foul play.

Police and fire crews were assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police and the Department of Natural Resources.
