It is heartbreaking to drive past the old Mich-E-Ke-Wis field in winter, and see no ice rink. We had a world class rink where speedskating and recreational skating enthusiasts enjoyed a natural family environment for free, provided by the City. Now we have to pay to skate, or make our own 'pond', like we do in Ossineke, albeit on a smaller scale. Meanwhile, water is wasted on the phallus "Ice Tree" across the street from Mich-E-Ke-Wis. Ironic.

Shame on Habermahl and VanWormer. MPAC forged forward with a dream that all users of Mich-E-Wis skaters had and jumped thru all the hoops, road blocks placed by county commissioners and raised funds to build "The Gem of The North", Northern Lights Arena and did a awesome job managing it. Oh yes, it was not all smooth going but was much appreciated by the user groups. And Mr. VanWormer the Park Foundation is NOT Besser Foundation at least from what I can find. The townships that are represented by Habermahl and Van Wormer need to check out a recall such as the city did!??

Mr. VanWormer, and Mr. Habermehl, I want you to know that I personally wrote a letter to Jim Parks stating we wanted M-PAC and The Parks Foundation to form a partnership, NOT push them out. I don't believe anyone is ungrateful for the money the Parks Foundation has contributed as was written in the article, but there are others who have also donated not only money, but blood, sweat, and tears to see The NLA come to fruition. The NLA is one of the best facilities I have seen in Michigan. There’s great opportunity for the rink, the players, and its surrounding community if it’s managed properly.

Please, stop making excuses, don’t blame the User Groups, The AHA, or The Wrecks, management is the issue here and it starts at the top. I’m new to Alpena, I’ve seen how other rinks are run, and I personally feel that there was a lack of creativity on management to bring more programs, camps, tournaments, and events to the rink, which would have created the “new revenue streams” you talk abou

continued... The cost of ice may or may not affect some, but hardly for those of us who are die-hard hockey fans, parents, and skaters!

I want the two of you to know this, not ONCE have I been approached to volunteer for The NLA, I’ve never heard of a volunteer program either. I didn’t see posters hanging from the walls like I do at other rinks asking for people to volunteer. Never has there been mention of “breaks on costs” from rink management if people do volunteer. Where you get your information is beyond me, but you may actually want to talk to the user groups and others, rather than bash them in the article. The people running these programs and the parents involved have given a lot, and I know that I am very grateful for their contributions.

In closing, there have been many days that I've driven home from an away 5-game Jamboree, and my 7yr old son is upset it’s over. He always wants MORE HOCKEY! As a hockey mom, this makes it all worth it!
