Opening loss
Alpena’s Zach Karsten checks Lakeland’s Neil Brooks Friday night at Northern Lights Arena during the Huron Shores Hockey Challenge.
Lakeland got a power play late in the second period and scored the only goal in the third period for a 3-2 win over Alpena in the Huron Shores Challenge Friday at Northern Lights Arena. The Wildcats owned a 2-1 lead late in the second period despite having only six shots on net. But a new defensive front had trouble controlling Lakeland for most of the third period and couldn’t hold the lead. “We had a young team that panicked,” said Alpena hockey coach Chris Limback. “They had the jitters and a bigger role (today).” Luckily, Alpena (0-1) had Doug Snow. After letting in a soft goal 42 seconds into the game to Neil Brooks, Snow settled down and let the Wildcats get back into the game. Snow had four breakaway saves and finished with 21 saves in the game. “Snow did a good job,” said Limback. An experienced team proved too much for Alpena.
