Coaching witch hunt No. 15,345

Wed, May 14, 2008 @ 3:04PM Apparently there are some people in Rogers City with too much free time, and money, on their hands. After all, taking out an ad in the paper and attending a school board meeting, which the group led by Rogers City resident Val Vogelheim did this week, all in the name of getting varsity boys coach Karl Grambau fired seems pretty silly in my opinion. Has Grambau done a perfect job leading the Hurons? No, what high school coach does? I thought his team this year underachieved a little and a few others have bowed out of the postseason too early. But he did help the Hurons get to the regional just two years ago and also helped guide them there in 2002, not bad for a program that generally takes a backseat to the wrestling team. He also cares about each of his players from the top scorer to the last guy on the bench.

When penny costs more than a penny

Thu, May 8, 2008 @ 7:00PM Maybe, just maybe, big government does get it. Last week, it was reported that pennies and nickels were worth less than it cost to make them. Currently, pennies cost 1.26 cents to make — a loss of 0.26 cents; nickels currently cost 7.7 cents — a loss of 2.7 cents. Holy wow?!?!?! It almost sounds like buying a car where the minute you drive it off the lot it’s worth less than what you just paid for it. Now that’s a real loss of income. The Associated Press is reporting Thursday that the House voted unanimously on a plan that would change the makeup of the coins to make them worth more than they cost to make. However, every sunny day has the threat of rain. Surprise, surprise, according to the AP story, the Bush administration — and some lawmakers — has objections. First (OK, recently; Bush has been off on plenty) he’s surprised by news that gas might hit $4 a gallon, now he opposes the U.S. mint not going in debt by cutting the cost of producing coins.

Hillary's support

Mon, May 12, 2008 @ 11:21AM It was billed as Arizona's largest ghost town that today is more of a hippie hang-out. Naturally intrigued, Diane and I set out through the desert rim and rock to Jerome - not your average Wild West town. As we kept crossing back and forth over the switch-backs leading up the side of the mountain I wondered out loud if the road ever was going to straighten out again. The answer, by the way, was no. However, just around the one corner there was a group of houses precariously hanging on to the side of the mountain and in the middle, was one that definitely caught my eye. Pictured with the blog is the house - with patriotic red, white and blue bras adorning the fence and a sign "Support Hillary" out front. It was too good to pass by so I did a quick turn-around to capture it on camera and share with readers. This week is a critical one for Hillary's campaign.

Crop for a cause

Mon, April 28, 2008 @ 2:01PM If you’re into scrapbooking AND helping a worthwhile organization, a special event this Saturday (May 3) will combine an opportunity to do both. The Alzheimer’s Association is teeming up with the Forget-Me-Not Shoppe at the Center Building in downtown Alpena to host a Crop for the Cause benefit. Nearly 20 local businesses have donated items to be given away during the event. Besides great door prizes, participants will enjoy a Chinese raffle, snacks and professionals on hand to answer any scrapbooking questions. Make-n-take classes also will be offered throughout the day. As an avid scrapbooker, I’ve attended previous scrapbooking events at the Forget-Me-Not Shoppe, and can honestly say it’s great fun being around others who share this hobby. Not only do you get uninterupted time to actually complete some scrapbook pages, but seeing the creativity and ideas of others is always inspiring.
