Confessions of an American Idol fan
April 2, 2008 - Diane Speer
Okay, I hate to admit this but.....I’m a closet fan of American Idol. I know lots of people out there don’t give reality television shows the time of day. In most instances, I agree. Shows like Wife Swap and Supernanny have to be some of the dumbest tv fare out there. Even worse is The Bachelor. Because my new daughter-in-law gets a kick out of watching The Bachelor, I decided to give it a try last week. Sorry, Betsy, I had to switch the channel! I just couldn’t stomach watching all those women getting so excited about a group date to a casino and then falling all over each other trying to impress the exact same guy. I’m probably showing my age, but what woman in her right mind would want to put herself through that degradation?
Back to my original point though. As I said, I make a reality show exception for American Idol (okay, more confessions - I don’t mind Dancing with the Stars either). American Idol amuses and entertains me, especially now that the contestants have been pared down to a group of seemingly talented young performers. Last night it was the top nine singing Dolly Parton tunes. Some of the judge’s questionable comments aside, I loved David Archuleta’s pure voice, David Cook’s own arrangement, Michael Johns’ rocker edge and Brooke White’s sweet spirit. It’s time for another contestant to depart tonight. My money’s on Ramiele Malubay. She can certainly sing and she makes a perfect pouty face. I just think she’s had her run with the show.
Is anybody else out there spending a part of their Tuesdays/Wednesdays clandestinely watching American Idol? How about Dancing With the Stars?
