There goes the undefeated season
March 31, 2008 - Steve Murch
So the Detroit Tigers aren’t going to go 162-0 since they’ve lost their season opener. Did anyone believe they would?
The thing that always strikes me as incredibly odd is someone will sound a death knell for a team after one game. It doesn’t matter what sport, if a team with high expectations doesn’t come out and build an insurmountable lead right out of the box they’re flawed and won’t win it all, the complaints go.
So let’s not play the rest of the season and just tell the Tigers they won’t win so go home and enjoy the summer. What’s the sense, the doomsayers have determined it’s over.
I’d like to know how many teams have won a World Series, Stanley Cup, Super Bowl and NBA title after winning their first game of the year. My guess is quite a few.
The only thing determined today is that Detroit won’t win all of its games. All you bandwagon hoppers might get tired jumping on and off the wagon.
This year, five of us took part in our preseason speculation about baseball — Sports Editor Chris Dobrowolski, sports writer John Bronz, staff writer Phil Wenzel, former page designer Adam Trumble (now working at the Nevada Appeal in Carson City, Nev., and me. The picks were made March 24.
John and Adam picked Detroit to win it all; I picked the Tigers to lose in the World Series to Arizona; Phil picked them to be the AL wild card but not advance; and Chris doesn’t believe they will make the playoffs.
World Series picks
John — Detroit over Arizona Adam — Detroit over Chicago Cubs Chris — NY Yankees over Philadelphia Phil — Boston over San Diego Me — Arizona over Detroit.
Only 161 more games until we see if those teams make the playoffs.
