Mike Markowski from WATZ died today. I don’t know the cause of death, but know he had been sick.
I will remember Mike from my two seasons of broadcasting Alpena High hockey. My broadcast partner Craig Froggett were green our first year and it was nice to have Mike as our engineer back at the station for most of the games that initial season. He did most of our games that first year, and if memory serves me right he always did the first game of the weekend when we had road games.
One of the things we always had to do following a game was a taped wrap-up that would be broadcast on FM (the games were broadcast on AM). As the play-by-play guy, Craig usually did them, but one game in Sault Ste. Marie on a Saturday he got sick and I had to do the entire game solo. I also did the wrap-up, and stuck it in one take.
Mike razzed Craig the next game which was a Friday, so Craig and I split the wrap-ups. Craig, of course, would put added pressure on me when it was my turn by calling me Mr. One Take.
That one incident of giving Craig a hard time was probably the only time Mike deviated from being direct and professional.
My thoughts go out to Mike’s family.
