From Russia with Love....

February 20, 2014 - Steve Schulwitz
The Winter Olympics have been less than thrilling for me this year. Unlike most years when I'm captivated by all of the events and sitting on the edge of my seat as the events unfold and medals are awarded, this year has been different and I have nobody to blame but myself.

I love both the Summer and Winter Olympics, but I also love Twitter and it didn't take long for me to realize that the two don't go hand in hand if you want to experience the thrill of victory, or the agony of defeat.

The spoilers began during the opening ceremony when Twitter was ablaze with updates on the event, and kicked into high gear when there was a malfunction with on of the Olympic rings which was supposed to unite with the others high over the arena. I tried to watch it anyway, but ended up turning the channel halfway through it.

The problem is I use Twitter a bunch. I use it to get breaking news, sports information, as well as for the entertaining satire accounts. Going even an hour without scrolling through my timeline is nearly impossible for me, so as events took place, I knew how they played out hours before I would get home to watch them. Bummer.

I'm not sure I have missed much however, as it seems most of the focus on the Games has been on potential terror threats, stray dogs, unfinished (nasty) accommodations and Pussy Riot. Russia may have done its best to host the games, but in my opinion the developments around the Games have been larger than those who have earned medals and cast a shadow over them.

As is normally the case, the United States is among the medal count leaders and still has strong athletes who should increase the number of gold tallied. I have yet to see a medal presentation, however. As the Games wind down I'm sure I'll watch many more hours, but it feels like watching a rerun of a sitcom to me, so I'm not going to expect any surprises. #bummer #winterolympics #russia #goldmedal.
