A successful film festival

January 28, 2014 - Steve Murch
I believe in getting involved in the community, and one of the things I'm involved in is the Thunder Bay Film Festival. This past weekend we had either full or nearly full houses for every session.

Most of the people involved in putting on the event have some ties to the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The consensus among those who worked during the festival is it was a great success.

We were a sellout on Friday night for the gala and near capacity for every session on Saturday and Sunday except for one. And that one still was probably about 75 percent full.

We had ocean films, Great Lakes films, NOAA produced films. Some were short and some a bit longer, but the longest film of the weekend was an hour. And the theater at the Heritage Center is great place to watch films; a nice big screen and good sound.

At least one person was there for every film, and a few missed only a couple of them. Everyone who walked out of there had positive things to say and had a smile on their face when the films were done.

At the wrap party on Sunday night I had the opportunity to talk to Vince Deur, whose film Unsalted was the feature film on Saturday. I was able to talk to him and his wife for probably a half hour and I guarantee that when he has another film that we could show, he'll be here if it's on the schedule.

We've tentatively set the date for next year — the weekend of Jan. 23-25 (though we may expand, depending on how our plans develop) — which still keeps us off Super Bowl weekend. Even after a long, full weekend we were throwing out ideas for the 2015 Thunder Bay Film Festival before Sunday was over.

If you were there, thank you. If you weren't I hope you were either at the snowcross event at the fairgrounds, or at the SnoDrift Rally in Montmorency County. The calendar of events in Northeast Michigan continues to grow as more and more groups find a niche to put on the list of entertainment events. Your support of these events ensure more, and improving, events in our area.
