One of the advantages of my job is where The Alpena News office is located — right across the street from the Alpena County Library. That makes it a cinch to slip over not only for answers to reference questions, but also to occasionally catch an interesting program or two that might be taking place during regular work hours. That proved to be the case Tuesday when over my lunch hour I walked the short distance from my building to the library to hear Eric Peterson give one of his monthly Cooking with Eric programs on quick dishes to fix ahead. What fun! A healthy-sized crowd turned out along with me, and watched while Eric demonstrated and talked about four different recipes. He handed out the recipe instructions, and even better, had samples of each dish (the extremely easy to make Beef Roll-ups were delicious!) in warmed chaffing dishes for everyone to try.
The Cooking with Eric program is just one of the many interesting activities our library provides to the public on a regular basis. For me, Eric’s efforts were just a prelude — I’ve also signed up for one of Alpena Community College’s Community Ed classes that he is teaching next week on how to make five different basic sauces. Both the program I just attended and the one I’m looking forward to next week at ACC certainly make me glad to reside in such an active community!
