The folks at Alpena Civic Theatre are gearing up for their second show of the 2007-08 season, “Painting Churches.” It’s not a show I’m familiar with, but I’m scheduled to see it for review purposes Jan. 9 during the senior night preview. When I first heard the title, I thought it referred to the painting of church buildings, but it actually revolves around the painting of a portrait for an elderly couple by the last name of Church. The show stars three of my favorite area performers — Susan Martindale, Terry Carlson and Chip Lavely, so I’m thinking it’s bound to be good. Chip tells me he first saw the show performed years ago in an off-Broadway production, and fell in love with it way back then. I’ll let you know how it goes for me... Run dates are Jan. 10-13 and 17-20. Reservations can be made by calling the box office at 354-3624.
A pitch for help: ACT is currently updating the archives of its more than 50-year history of the theater. It is amazing to me that this rich cultural entity has such a long, enduring history to brag about! Anyway, they are especially looking for items pertaining to shows performed prior to 1983. If anyone has old programs, pictures or memorabilia from those years and would be willing to donate them to the theater or loan them for copying, call Sue Maxwell at 471-2235.
