How do I love thee?
February 12, 2013 - Bill Speer
I'm not a fan of Jared.
Neither do I care much for Kay.
For a guy like me, this time of year can be rather depressing.
No, I'm as romantic as the next guy and I live daily with the love of my life. But blasted with the endless marketing for diamonds this time of year, and the price tag that accompanies the ones they are marketing makes me feel, well - cheap.
Thankfully I know better. Even more so, thankfully my wife does as well, as long as she knows she's appreciated, valued and loved. But for us guys, this Valentine's marketing blitz can make our heads spin.
For instance, I didn't realize this but one billion Valentine's Day cards will sent this week, making it the second largest "Hallmark" card-sending holiday right behind Christmas.
Or, some 36millions boxes of chocolate will be sold for this week. In fact, according to BIGinsight, the average person will spend $130.97 on candy, cards, gifts and more for Valentine's Day this year.
The National Retail Federation said $1.6 billion will be spent on candy this week, amounting to 51 percent of all Valentine purchases. Another 36.6 percent will give flowers, with spending at $1.9 billion, with 19.7 percent will buy jewelry, at more than $4.4 billion on diamonds, gold and silver. Jared and Kay will do just fine without me, I'm sure. As for Diane, I think she'll understand.
