Zonta got it right
April 26, 2012 - Diane Speer
I know I've been at this job awhile when I look at the Zonta Club of Alpena's Women of the Year Banquet brochure and can remember being there to see everyone of the last 20 honorees announced. It's always heartwarming to find who the yearly selection is, to see her reaction when she finds out that she's the one being honored and to hear of all the wonderful things she has done to receive the award.
Time after time, the club keeps coming up with worthwhile individuals to honor - women who have made a significant impact in the community because of their volunteerism. One would think that at some point, the club would run out of people to honor. Not so.
This year, Zonta got it exactly right by choosing to present the award to Nancy Smithem. Being in the media, I've seen first-hand all of the causes and events Nancy has embraced and promoted. She's such a giver and always seems to be thinking of others. Even knowing how much she's been involved in the community over the years, I was surprised by the extent of her involvement when her accomplishments were listed during the banquet. She is truly an amazing person!
What makes Zonta's presentation of the award even more special this year is that Nancy's husband, Jim, is dealing with a terminal illness. Even so, she still lives her life with joy and still thinks of the needs of others. While many would bow under the pressure of a husband in the same set of circumstances, she choses to look at all the blessings that have been given to her. In true Nancy fashion, she even questioned why she should be the one to receive still one more blessing - her honor as Zonta's Woman of the Year - when she sees so many others around her that she considers deserving.
I doubt there was a person in the room Wednesday evening who didn't rejoice over Zonta's 2012 pick. Well done, Zonta Club of Alpena!
