January 3, 2012 - Steve Schulwitz
The biggest and most memorable event in 2011 was my marriage to my wife, Andrea, and adding two step-daughters into my family. Nothing during the remainder of the year or the rest of my life can or will top it. We were married at Lakeside Park in Rogers City on June 4 and had a reception at Belknap Township Hall where we shared our special occasion with friends and family. To make a long story short, they are my world and I am blessed to have them in my life.

One of my passions has always been music, and last January I was asked to join a local hard rock band called Human Wreckage. Soon after joining, the band began writing original material and has progressed to the point to where we have begun recording our songs with the help of Brett Harfert from The Darwin Project. Our radio debut is expected to take place before the end of January this year. The band finished fifth in Michigan in the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands Contest in the rock category. More than 350 bands entered. We also had a chance to perform for Grammy Award winning producer Jason Atwell, who was in Alpena doing research for a possible reality television show. Very cool. The band provides me a release valve for stress and another avenue of self-expression. Dave Elton and Morgan, thanks for the opportunity and this year should be a blast!

From a work aspect, another local election came and went. The one big change in terms of local government in Alpena was the election of Matt Waligora as mayor. I also covered the trial of Vance Mills, who was found guilty of the armed robbery of the LeFave Pharmacy. I believe over the course of the last year my reporting skills have dramatically improved, and thanks to the direction of my supervisors, I anticipate the same in 2012. I love my job and appreciate the support the readers have given me.

So what does 2012 bring?

We have a trip to Disney World planned in February and will celebrate the marriage of our friends, Chris and Denise in Las Vegas in March. Bigger than that, however, is THE LIONS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS! That alone promises to make 2012 memorable.

Happy New Year everyone!!!
