Urban legend

November 28, 2011 - Chris Dobrowolski
If you're a Michigan or Michigan State fan, or even just a fan of the Big Ten, you'd better get your punches in on Ohio State while you can.

Ohio State made the move that everyone was speculating would happen when it hired Urban Meyer to be its new football coach.

While it could take Meyer a few years to get the Buckeyes rolling again, considering the team will suffer some consequences from the illegal activities taking place Jim Tressel era. But once Meyer gets them through that they will be the team to beat in the Big Ten once again.

Frankly, I would be very afraid if I were any of Ohio State's league opponents. Meyer has a track record of tremendous accomplishment at every coaching stop he's had.

He turned around Bowling Green and led it to a 17-6 record in his time there.

At Utah, he guided the Utes to a then school record 10 win season in his first year, then helped them go 12-0 and win a BCS game against Pittsburgh in Year 2.

As the head coach at Florida Meyer gave the Gators' faithful two national championships in 2006 and 2008.

I wouldn't expect anything less than that at Ohio State, where all the resources for winning, particularly money from hungry boosters and alums, are readily available.

The only question I have is will Meyer's health allow him to get to the top of the mountain again? The end of his tenure at Florida was marked more by health concerns than championships, and if he allows his work to affect him now as much as it did then, that might be the only hope others in the Big Ten might have.
