That love thing

February 14, 2008 - Steve Murch
Love is in the air.

Forgive me for pulling out a 30+ year old song, but you can’t avoid all things love today — Valentine’s Day. We have a good story today by Patty Ramus on how four couples met and fell in love (the link to the story is at the right).

Things kinds of stories are all over newspapers today. They’re the feel-good stories people want to read once in a while. Perhaps the most interesting item on Valentine’s Day I found was a stand-alone photo at the Torrance Daily Breeze Web site — a group of men checking out with various romantic items. It puts a smile on your face (see the link to the right).

It makes it real difficult to put a light-hearted story prominently on the page when you have an ever-unfolding tragedy like we’ve had with the five family members dying in a fire in Rogers City Tuesday. This is a story that is still unfolding and won’t conclude, at least for some, until the closure with the funeral on Friday.

Having a story like Valentine’s Day directly below the story on the community coming together at first might seem a poor juxtaposition. There was thought about moving the Valentine’s story to the inside, losing it’s visual appeal and leaving the the front for the hard news.

But hindsight is a wonderful thing and looking back I’m glad we have page 1 the way it wound up. Bad news/sad news happens when it happens and we can’t change that. More importantly, however, is that today’s Rogers City story (link to the right) is about love. It’s about a community that cares about its friends and neighbors, and how the city is coming together in a time of need.

So by all accounts, there are two stories about love on today’s front page. One of love for another, and one about love of life.
