We Are Human Wreckage...
April 22, 2011 - Steve Schulwitz
It has been many years since I have been in a band, but as of a few months ago, I was asked to consider joining a Northeast Michigan rock band called Human Wreckage. I decided to give it a whirl and auditioned. I got the gig.
We spent the first two months writing original music, learning cover tunes and developing cohesiveness between the other members and myself. Much to all of our amazement, things jelled quickly, and before we knew it we have seven solid original songs and a dozen covers. We are ready for action.
Being in this band is a far cry from the others I have played in years ago. Obviously the days of swinging my chest-length hair all over the place and doing spins on stage are over, as I am a little heavier and a little lighter on the top of my head as well. My guitar playing and creative influence are much better, though, and I credit that to my age.
A few months back we entered Human Wreckage into the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands. The company is one of the corporate sponsors for the Van's Warped Tour, which is one of the largest traveling festivals each summer in the United States. The bands entered are divided into regions, and the winner gets to play at the concert in their home state. In Michigan, the show is at DTE Energy Music Theater in Clarkston.
Now, I never really thought we would have a chance to rank high in the contest with all the great musical talent in the state, but as of today, we are ranked #20 overall and #5 in the 'metal' category. In other words, we have done much better than I anticipated, and we have a chance – a slim one – but a chance. It would be a dream come true and an honor to represent Northeast Michigan. We don't get enough credit for our musical prowess.
We have two samples of our original material on the profile page and a live video clip coming Monday. We hope this new addition can generate more votes and, at the very least, new fans.
Now I do not typically use my blog for self-promotion, but I am going to make an exception this time. I am going to attach the link to the contest page, and I encourage everyone to vote.
Don't vote for the band because I am in it. Do it for the other members, who have been doing this for years and deserve the reward. Dave Shadbolt, the drummer and backbone of the band, has done a wonderful job bringing our music to life in the studio and deserves a big tip of the cap. Elton Schalk, another founding member, is the quietest of us, but his thunderous bass work and calmness keeps the band even-keeled. Then there is Morgan Suszek, our voice and our words. He is one of the most talented musicians and showmen I know, and that is high praise, because I know a lot. His thought-provoking and energized lyrics are one of our staples. He would do well on the large stage in front of a large crowd.
I want to thank Elton, David and Morgz for adding me to the mix and letting me contribute to the band. I look forward to sharing our music with the people not only in Northeast Michigan, but the entire state.
