On a visit

January 30, 2008 - Diane Speer
I'm heading off to Grand Rapids in the morning to attend the annual Michigan Press Association Convention, which is always a good mid-winter break and a good place to network with others in the same profession as myself. It also usually provides an opportunity to see/experience some of the cultural facilities in the city, since the hotel where my husband and I always stay is within easy walking distance of three different museums.

This year's Friday evening reception is taking place at the newly constructed Grand Rapids Arts Museum. I can't wait to see it. Two years ago, in between convention-related commitments, I walked to the art museum when it was located in its previous headquarters, a once grand old home converted into a museum. I remember being disappointed both by the dilapidated condition of the building and the limited amount of artwork on display. Then I saw a sign touting the construction of the new facility, and decided I would just bide my time until that new facility opened. That time has come! I'll share next week some of my impressions.
