Some things can't be replaced

October 9, 2009 - Bill Speer
I view this blog as an extension of our local newspaper, nothing more and nothing less. If I was not editor and publisher of The News, I would not be writing a blog.

I write this to offer people like Betty Michaud another opportunity to experience their Alpena News in a different fashion. I like to think of it as the "icing to the cake" of their newspaper experience.

Betty passed away this week at 88. As I read her obituary in the newspaper I was struck by it's beauty and how it captured a wonderful life. Of course, what I liked most was this sentence: "She was an avid and thorough reader of newspapers."

A recent survey I read said many respondents believed that if newspapers were to disappear off the American scene, they could rely on the internet and bloggers to keep them informed.

Not surprisingly, I don't agree. I think those people would be sorely disappointed with the content they received as time went on from bloggers and citizen journalists, many of whom exist solely to promote their own personal agendas.

I suspect that readers like Betty would not approve. I believe readers like Betty would be sorely disappointed. Then again, it's readers like Betty that make this discussion speculation rather than reality.
