I get tons of emails sent to me daily here at the newspaper, and I tend to be fairly heavy-handed with the delete button on those that I automatically know are junk mail. Not nearly as often - though much more welcome - are the emails that genuinely make me smile.
So here's today smiler, complete with a photo. It comes from George Greene of Presque Isle, who nominated his six-year-old golden retriever named Scout for Assistant Newpaper Carrier of the Year.
As George tells it, Scout leaves the house every morning except Sunday to go out to the road and get the morning Alpena News from the newspaper tube. "Neither rain or snow, nor dark and cold will deter her from her duty," George writes.
Scout brings the paper to the glass door by the kitchen table and then expects her reward - a king-sized milk bone that she takes to her rug to savor. This isn't a new trick, either. Scout has been doing her paper delivery feat faithfully since she took over this task at the tender age of six months. When George and his wife get up in the morning, all they have to say is "paper" and let her out the front door.
Sounds like an award-winning dog to me - and a good reason to smile!
