A walk to remember
October 2, 2009 - Diane Speer
I've always believed all the different benefit walks held in our community for worthwhile causes that range from Alzheimer's disease to suicide prevention to juvenile diabetes are vastly important.
But ever since last Christmas day, I've gained a new appreciation for walks that are planned to raise funds for the cure of diseases that have long plagued our friends, our neighbors and our families. It was on Dec. 25, 2008, that my only sibling passed away from breast cancer at age 55. Tomorrow, I will be walking in the Zonta Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in my sister's memory.
Knowing someone who is currently grappling with breast cancer or has died from it seems to be a nearly universal experience, so it was fairly easy to talk a few friends and co-workers of mine into joining me on the walk. We've all been touched by breast cancer one way or another.
So Team Alpena News will be right there alongside the hundreds of other walkers from around the area who care enough to literally give feet to this cause. Just maybe - one of these days - scientists really will find a cure. In the meantime, I am walking to remember.....
