Me and my big mouth

August 25, 2009 - Steve Schulwitz
The back-to-school shopping season is reaching it's peak, but it seems to me more and more parents are electing to leave the area to shop for their children's classroom attire. Many of my friends have been going to Birch Run, Saginaw, Traverse City, Petoskey and Gaylord to shop at merchants that stock name brands not found in Alpena. Because of my big mouth, I may soon be making that same trek, for that same reason. Several weeks ago my girlfriend's two daughters were looking for their tennis shoes and when they weren't found I told them I would buy them a cheap pair of sneakers to last the summer. I went on to add that I would buy each of them a pair of Nike for school. What came next was unexpected, and will be a dent in my wallet for years to come. Both girls, in unison, asked me "What is Nike?" I couldn't just say nevermind and change the subject. No, I had to show them. Big mistake. All I did was show them the swoosh on my baseball hat and it was off to the races for them. It was as if a light bulb clicked on, as they searched the house for more products with the legendary symbol on it. They found a bunch. My shoes, their mother's shoes, my baseball glove, my cleats, my golf shoes, balls and towel and well you get the point... My point is that if I would have just kept my mouth shut, they wouldn't have known the difference between the Nike or some boppers from Walmart. But now that they know mom and Steve have Nike, they must also. It would only have been a matter of time until they noticed the other kids at school wearing the Nike brand and wanted it as well. But it would have been nice to milk the savings for a while!!! So it has begun. I know visits to NorthFace, American Eagle, Abercrombie and other outlets are now in order. Hey, at least they don't know the difference between a Ford Focus and a Ferrari....yet.
