Good-bye to a long-time friend
August 7, 2009 - Diane Speer
A bunch of us here at the newspaper gathered last night at Burton's Last Resort for a retirement send-off for John Jackowiak. In recent year's John has been our marketing manager, but over the span of his 40-plus years at The Alpena News, he has worn a multitude of hats.
I've only had the pleasure of working with John for the last 20 years of his outstanding career, but that was more than enough time to realize just how special of a person he is. He knows newspapers backwards and forwards, is a huge encourager and team builder among employees, and is perhaps our biggest ambassador out in the community.
It's more than just about John's work attributes though. He's also just an all-around sterling individual and a great friend to many of us here at the newspaper. You work together for as many years as we have collectively through the grind of putting out a daily newspaper and you definitely cross the line from being co-workers to becoming more like family.
So one of our newspaper family members will no longer be gracing us with his daily presence. It is bittersweet. We, of course, wish him (and Rosie, too!) peace, happiness and contentment with this next phase in life, but we are definitely diminished here at The Alpena News because of his retirement. Our hats off to you, John, and to all that you've meant to us both personally and professionally!
P.S. And here's a personal note to John: Come NIE Book Sale time, whatever am I going to do without you??? If you find retirement boring, come January/February of next year, feel free to join me in sorting and boxing up all those thousands of books donated for the sale. This was YOUR baby, and I will miss you immensely!
