As much as I like fishing, I hate carp.
Carp, in my estimation, are the lowest rung of the fish ladder. They are lazy, ugly and not fit to eat. Carp exist by eating off the mud and muck at the bottom of rivers and lakes. They are the original muckraker.
I'm reminded of carp this morning after Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama felt compelled to address a nasty rumor circulating out on the internet Tuesday. E-mails are flying about Obama's so-called Muslim roots and his lack of belief in the Bible. Sadly, a recent letter to the editor at the newspaper seems to have drawn information from that e-mail.
“I’ve been to the same church - the same Christian church - for almost 20 years,” Obama told a reporter for the Boston Herald. “I was sworn in with my hand on the family Bible. Whenever I’m in the United States Senate, I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. So if you get some silly e-mail . . . send it back to whoever sent it and tell them this is all crazy. Educate.”
Which is good reminder that the carp amongst have can have a field day stirring up the mud and muck at the bottom of the political process. We've seen it before and we we will see it again.
We need to stop for a minute and consider the source of that information. If it is a blanket e-mail sent to hundreds, be skeptical. The internet can be a valuable source of good information, but it also is filled with a lot of mis-information.
Educate yourself. Do some research. Don't be caught swimming at the bottom of the river with the carp.
