Big night for Harry Potter
July 15, 2009 - Steve Murch
The new Harry Potter movie opened at midnight last night (forgive me for not knowing the name, it's not on my radar) and our news designer, Caroline, and one of the reporters, Crystal, went to it. They were smart and purchased their tickets on Monday.
During the evening Caroline was talking about it and Mike, our sports writer, asked her what she thought the over/under would be for attendance. She didn't say, but Mike guessed 2 and Chris, our sports editor, guessed 12. I at least guessed 150, thinking there are always die hards in any group.
Now, I explain my answer as: it was Tuesday after all, and the largest portion of the core audience would be a bit younger and it was past their bed time or curfew. However, I was forgetful about how the group who grew up with Harry Potter are now in their 20s and, hence, don't have a bed time.
So as Chris and I left last night after waiting for the all-star game story to leave it was about 11:40. I walked last night and had to go right past Royal Knight Theater. Well, we were all extremely short on the over/under. The line was moving when I approached and it was three or four deep the entire length of the block. I quickly called Mike on my way home to tell him. He had left about 11 and said the line was that long when he got out.
None of us realized that they showed it on more than one screen last night. If they hadn't there would have been plenty of people turned away. Score one for Harry for a grand start.
