Hot group in cool city

June 18, 2009 - Diane Speer
It's not that I'm wishing my life away, but once I grow older and have retired from my current job, I will certainly look forward to joining the Association of Lifelong Learners at Alpena Community College. For one thing, I like the group because of what its name implies - lifelong learning. How cool is that concept?

But even better, is the fun this group has in pursuit of keeping active and busy with all manner of subjects that hold their interest. Take today for example. ALL hosted a My Favorite Things gathering in ACC's Park Arena, where various members and a few others from the community filled up the college gymnasium with exhibits of their favorite hobbies, collections or organizations that they are involved in.

There was everything from an interest in the Civil War, pie making, travel and calligraphy to collections of butterflies, teapots, nesting dolls and model airplanes. One booth of particular interest to me - given my profession - was a collection of front sections of newspapers that recorded significant events in history, mostly related to the U.S. Presidency.

I came away from the afternoon event convinced of what I already knew. ALL is a great organization that deserves a lot of recognition. And it may just live up to its self-proclaimed billing as Alpena's "Hottest Group in the Coolest City."
