Through the Eyes of A Child

June 5, 2009 - Diane Speer
While I've covered many activities for The Alpena News for nearly 20 years now, it sometimes takes a fresh set of eyes to enable me to see things anew. That's been the case this past week as my husband and I have been hosting a two-week visit from my 10-year-old great-niece, Lindsey. So far, she loves all the places we've taken her in and around Alpena, and she's given us a renewed appreciation for living in Northeast Michigan. We've spent time beach combing at Starlite Beach and Besser Bell (it's still been a bit too cold to actually get in the water!), indulging in ice cream cones at Dairy Queen, fishing at Fletcher Floodwaters and visiting both the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center and the Besser Museum. Lindsey, who lives in Pennsylvania, had a great time climbing over the ship exhibit at the maritime museum and exploring the Besser Museum. The Besser Museum has always been on my beat, and I'm there quite frequently to take photos or report on upcoming activities. But Lindsey allowed me to see the museum from a kid's perspective - she found lots of nooks and crannies with interesting things explore. Yesterday, she had a ball when my son's girlfriend spent a few hours with her at the Small Boat Harbor where she loved looking at the boats and climbing on the rock wall. Lindsey and Sarah also tried their hands at miniature golf at JJ's Awesome Acres. Now she's looking forward to a trip to Dinosaur Gardens, hopefully being able to swim in Lake Huron and maybe catching a movie. Her being here has helped us to realize all over again that we wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the country!
