Now this is quite impressive.
Earlier this week the Michigan Department of Community Health announced that free nicotine replacement products are available through the Michigan Tobacco Quit Line. The products are available through April 30 or until supplies run out, which ever comes first.
It’s starting to look like the latter. In the 24-hour period beginning at midnight Wednesday the quit line received 21,000 calls. I had a call Thursday from someone who wanted to know if the number was correct in the story we ran in Thursday’s paper because she couldn’t get through. There was no busy signal or anything to indicate the call went through, just dead air.
Sound like the line was overwhelmed.
According to a press release from the Department of Community Health, the quit line can handle up to 599 calls simultaneously. On a normal day there would be 20-40 calls every 15 minutes. There are over 400 staff members handling calls.
Anyone who hasn’t been living under rock knows that tobacco is addictive. It’s encouraging to see so many people at least take that first step to quit smoking. Hopefully they are successful. For those looking for the number, its 1-800-480-7848 if you are unable to get through, the other number suggested is 1-800-QUIT NOW.
