A success story
February 9, 2009 - Diane Speer
A hearty thank-you goes out to everyone who helped to make our Newspapers in Education Book Sale such a terrific success this past Saturday. After the final tally was taken, we raised nearly $3,900 for our program that provides newspapers free of charge to nearly 25 school classrooms in our circulation area.
Because of the generous donations of books by the general public, plus a partnership with students at Sanborn Elementary School, we had literally thousands of books to offer for sale. The general public turned out in full force and did lots and lots of buying.
Of course, most events like this don't go off without a minor hitch or two, and ours was weather-related. Though the sale was held indoors at the Thunder Bay Recreation Center, because of the warm temperatures and melting snow, a huge leak sprung in the room where we were set up. By the end of the day, there was about an inch of water covering the floor. People seemed to perservere though, slogging through the water to make their purchases - just another reason for us to say thanks.
Since the book sale is only a one-day event, we still have a tons of books left over. Many of those will be available for purchase in our front office. Stop by The Alpena News and feel free to browse through the multiple tables of hardbounds, paperbacks and children's books.
And once again, our thanks to all who donated or purchased books. We couldn't have done it without you!
