Quite a scene

January 20, 2009 - Steve Murch
Incredible. Amazing. Unbelievable.

Those were the words uttered most often this morning as the crowds began gathering for the inauguration of Barack Obama. Several hundred thousand people already had their spot picked out or were looking for a spot by 6 a.m. TV cameras needed lighting to see the people gathered since it was well before daybreak.

Now just minutes before Obama takes over, there is nothing but a mass of humanity. While I can’t imagine fighting the crowds, I fully appreciate those who want to take part in the event live. I will settle for watching it with coworkers in the newsroom.

This is one of those rare moments in a lifetime and I assume most of America is going to find a way to watch the event, though there will be those who don’t for one reason or another. Too bad, it will be their loss. This is history in the making and the only time ever to see the first black man sworn in as president.

Democrat or Republican, conservative or liberal — today is a once-in-a-lifetime moment for America.
