January 14, 2009 - Diane Speer
It’s that time of year again when The Alpena News is gearing up for its annual Book Sale to be held in conjunction with the 2009 Business Expo. This year’s event is slated for Feb. 7 at the Thunder Bay Rec Center, and in the meantime, we’ve been soliciting the public for donations of books. Local residents have responded in kind, dropping off boxes and bags of books in abundant supply at our newspaper office.
The task of sorting the books by category falls to Marketing Manager John Jackowiak and me. We usually reserve about an hour at the end of our regular work day to sort. John complains a bit, but I think he secretly likes doing it. I, on the other hand, love looking at all those books! We always receive a huge variety, including classics, current bestsellers, self-help books and just about everything in between. As we’re sorting, we usually find a bunch to chuckle over, like yesterday when we unearthed an old McGuffy Reader whose stories featured the Dick and Jane from our childhood days of first learning to read. Several of the titles and cover photos of the Harlequin romances (“Blackmailed into the Italian’s Bed,” for example) also provided cause for laughter. There must be more people out there reading those bodice-rippers than I ever realized because we’ve already received a ton of them as donations. Who knew?
For anyone who wants to clear their home of books they no longer need, then consider bringing them into our office for our upcoming sale that benefits the Newspapers in Education program to area schools. If you need assistance with pick-up at your home, just call The Alpena News office at 354-3111 and ask for John.
And for anyone who loves to read, the Book Sale is the place to be come Feb. 7. We’ll see you there!
