The comeback kid

December 4, 2008 - Steve Murch
What a comeback. Ariane was all but left for dead after the first two weeks of Top Chef. But now she looks like one of the top cheftestants. First she had an outstanding turkey last week, this week she was the best in a Today Show challenge.

While her confidence is up, she still seems like one bad showing from a nervous breakdown. Or at the least, tears. I don’t know, she just seems like she could be easily rattled. It’s a competition and every year it seems like there is one contestant who tries to push buttons and does it with some success. So will there be someone who tries to know Ariane down a notch?

If there is anyone who else who is on a roll as much as Ariane, it’s Leah — who has won the last two quickfire challenges. I picked Leah as one of my three players in the fantasy challenge ($2,500 grand prize, plus weekly prizes). I lost one player (Alex) this week, which means I lost four points. While I think the Europeans are likely to be there for quite a while, I can’t root for someone I hope gets eliminated.

It’s still too soon to tell who the favorite should be, unlike last year when Stephanie, Richard and Antonia just seemed to have the right stuff, and season three when Hung won — he just seemed like no one could beat him, though Casey was who J.B. and I were both rooting for.

The one thing I didn’t like about this week’s episode is it didn’t have any dishes I wanted to try and butcher. That’s half the fun, getting hungry and wanting to make dishes way out of my level of cooking.

There’s always next week.
