The Foo know food

November 27, 2008 - Steve Murch
I always like when show try to fit into the holidays. Top Chef had its “Thanksgiving” episode last night, with the chefs having to prepare Thanksgiving dinner for the Foo Fighters. Of course, we all know it’s taped and it didn’t help matters that they were all dressed for warmer weather, when Rochester, N.Y., definitely has winter-like weather.

But who cares, it’s all about the food.

It was a great challenge, too. They only had microwaves and toaster ovens to cook their food. Hat’s off to Gene who ad libbed and built a grill to help with the cooking. It showed real ingenuity in the face of mediocre cooking equipment. He’s quickly becoming one of my favorites. He’s worked his way up from dishwasher, so you have to root for that kind of perseverance.

When eating, I know what I like and why I like it, but I’m not sure I could give critical insight on whether a dish is good or not. I have to hand it to the band for being able to critique the chefs’ work.

If there was a good thing, it’s that I didn’t want to rush right out and prepare a Thanksgiving dinner. Unlike other weeks when I want to see if I can do it, I knew I had Thanksgiving dinner coming up today so I didn’t need to talk myself out of trying a new dish.

No surprise that Richard got axed because of who makes banana S’mores? The European connection was on the winning team, but it didn’t seem like they were dominant. I still can’t wait for them to slip up.
